Friends Always - Berliners Commemorate Berlin Airlift

On May 12, 2009, tens of thousands of Berliners flocked to Berlin’s legendary Tempelhof Airport in order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Blockade. They were joined by many US Airforce veterans who flew the life saving supplies into Berlin 60 years ago during a Soviet blockade of the Western part of the city. Berlin's Tempelhof Airport has officially closed. The final flights departed from Tempelhof on October 30, 2008.

Hope for Kai: A German-American Boy Needs Your Help

One month ago, the parents of a German-American boy named Kai Anderson took him to the doctor for what they thought was a severe flu. The blood test revealed, however, that their four-year-old son has a rare form of leukemia (named Philadelphia Chromosome). And he needs a bone marrow transplant within the next few months. Incredibly, this was the second one-in-a-million tragedy that the family had suffered: Kai's father was diagnosed with a rare, unrelated form of cancer just last year. Just days ago, it was confirmed that Kai’s baby brother is not a genetic match. Now, Kai’s best chance to find a genetic match lies in his German heritage--which means getting as many people of German ancestry tested wherever they live, in the United States, Germany or anywhere else.

Freedom Without Walls

US Students to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall came down on November 9, 1989, signaling the end of the Cold War and the beginning of a new era in transatlantic relations and European unity. Twenty years later, in the fall of 2009, students at more than 25 US universities will celebrate the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall by organizing Campus Weeks with financial and organizational support from the German Embassy in Washington DC. , as German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth announced last week.
The Freedom Without Walls Campus Weeks will include public speaking competitions and an art competition involving replicas of the Berlin Wall to be located across the country.

New Film with Swiss-American actress Renée Zellweger

"My One and Only"

In the comedy "My One and Only" Swiss-American actress Renée Zellweger plays a smart, cheerful `50's era mom, who drags her two teenage sons around the country on a husband-shopping adventure. She portrays this Southern belle with sparkles of feminine allure, strong-minded determination and more than a little naiveté. Renée Zellweger as Ann Devereaux is the force of nature at the center of the film, but her son George is clearly the only adult in her family, including his dad, played by Kevin Bacon, a bandleader who prefers the road and its temptations to family life. The story takes off from New York, hours after Ann Devereaux catches husband Dan with another woman, and hopscotches to Boston, then on to St. Louis, Phoenix and finally L.A, more or less following the Route 66.

My One and Only will be competing at the Cannes Film Festival May 13, 2009 in Cannes.
