Tennis Star Steffi Graf Honored with the Cross of the Order of Merit

German Consul General in Los Angeles, Dr. Christian Stocks, presented the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Steffi Graff during a private ceremony at his residence on March 16, 2009.
In recognition of her special merits and outstanding achievements as a world-class athlete and her philanthropic work with children traumatized by war, exile and violence, Ms. Graf was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit by German Federal President Horst Köhler on December 5, 2008. The award is the highest tribute paid to individuals for services to the Federal Republic of Germany. During his presentation, Consul General Stocks called Ms. Graf a “citizen of Germany and the world" and praised her for her exceptional accomplishments, extraordinary abilities and virtuous character.

Air Berlin: 30 Years of Aviation History

“Welcome on board our Air Berlin flight to Palma de Mallorca.” These were the words of the flight attendants greeting the 178 passengers on board its Boeing 707 for the first flight of Air Berlin on April 28, 1979. Only six days earlier, US pilot Kim Lundgren had received his license for “Air Berlin Inc” from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). A breakfast was served on that first flight and the passengers were able to buy perfume and chocolate as well as handbags from the onboard duty-free shop.
Air Berlin now flies to 130 places throughout the world. Resorts around the Mediterranean and in the Canaries were some of the major destinations from the start. Air Berlin also operates nonstop service from Miami and Fort Myers to Düsseldorf.
In April, Air Berlin will operate four flights a week from New York and beginning in May increase it to daily service. In addition, three flights a week from Los Angeles and Vancouver also begin operating in May. Check the website for current schedules and availability at www.airberlin.com.

Mission Hollywood: Til Schweiger and Moritz Bleibtreu back in Hollywood

RTL’s New Real Life Show is being produced in Los Angeles
On March 3, 2009, the production of “Mission Hollywood”, a new reality show on RTL, started in Berlin. The glamour show is being produced by Tresor TV Produktions GmbH until the end of April in Berlin and Los Angeles. In this show, 12 young aspiring actresses are competing against each other for the chance to get a role in a Hollywood movie. “Mission Hollywood” is presented by German actor and producer Til Schweiger who recently landed a big blockbuster hit with “Keinohrhasen” who also serves as mentor and judge on the show.
On March 27, we met six of the remaining candidates on the set in Hollywood where they had to play a scene from “Married with children”. Actor Moritz Bleibtreu who starred in a guest role and family members of the candidate had been flown in as a surprise in order to test the candidates’ ability to stay focused and in their role – a task they all mastered very well.

Im Ausland lebende Deutsche können auch an den Europawahlen teilnehmen. Hierbei haben Sie die Wahl, wo Sie teilnehmen möchten:

Einerseits besteht die Möglichkeit, per Briefwahl an den Europawahlen in Deutschland teilzunehmen. Dafür gelten die oben gemachten Ausführungen zu den Bundestagswahlen sinngemäß, wobei es ausreicht, seit mindestens drei Monaten in den Gebieten eines der Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union zu wohnen oder sich sonst gewöhnlich aufzuhalten. Das Antragsformular für die Eintragung in ein deutsches Wählerverzeichnis zur Europawahl am 7. Juni 2009 nebst einem Merkblatt kann bereits von der Internetseite des Bundeswahlleiters herunter geladen und direkt am Computer ausgefüllt werden.

Jeder Bürger der Europäischen Union kann aber statt in seinem Herkunftsland auch in seinem Wohnsitzland an den Europawahlen teilnehmen, sofern dieses Land Mitglied der EU ist. Ziehen Sie es also vor, sich durch die Kandidaten und Parteien Ihres Wohnsitzlandes im Europaparlament vertreten zu lassen, ist hierfür allerdings die Eintragung in die Wählerliste Ihrer Wohnsitzgemeinde erforderlich. Da es noch kein einheitliches europäisches Wahlgesetz gibt, richten sich eine Reihe von Bestimmungen (z.B. der Wahltag, das Wahlalter) nach nationalem Wahlrecht. In jedem Fall ist es verboten, mehr als eine Stimme abzugeben. Dies gilt auch für Auslandsdeutsche mit doppelter Staatsangehörigkeit; jeder Unionsbürger hat nur eine Stimme.

Please note the following information provided by the German Consulate in Los Angeles for German citizens living abroad who are interested in registering to vote in the upcoming German elections.

Informationen zur Wahlteilnahme aus dem Ausland

Deutsche können auch aus dem Ausland an in Deutschland abgehaltenen Wahlen teilnehmen. Zu unterscheiden ist zwischen Deutschen, die sich (vorübergehend) im Ausland aufhalten, aber weiter in Deutschland gemeldet sind, und Deutschen, die dauerhaft im Ausland leben und keinen Wohnsitz mehr in Deutschland haben.

1. Deutsche mit Wohnsitz in Deutschland
Deutsche, die sich (vorübergehend) im Ausland aufhalten und nach wie vor einen Wohnsitz in Deutschland haben, können jeweils einen Antrag auf Briefwahl stellen und so an allen Wahlen (Europa-, Bundestags-, Landtags- und Kommunalwahlen) teilnehmen. Der Antrag für die Briefwahl kann durch Ausfüllen des Wahlscheinsantrags, der auf der Rückseite der Wahlbenachrichtigung aufgedruckt ist, oder auch ohne Verwendung der Rückseite schriftlich, elektronisch oder mündlich (nicht jedoch telefonisch) unter Angabe des Familiennamens,Vornamens, Geburtsdatums und der Wohnanschrift gestellt werden. Bei Antritt des Auslandsaufenthalts vor Übersendung der Wahlbenachrichtigung, die grundsätzlich an die Meldeanschrift gesandt wird, wird empfohlen, mit der Wohnsitzgemeinde Rücksprache zu nehmen.

2. Deutsche mit dauerhaftem Aufenthalt im Ausland
Deutsche, die sich dauerhaft im Ausland aufhalten und keinen Wohnsitz mehr in Deutschland haben, können in Deutschland an Bundestagswahlen und Europawahlen teilnehmen. Die Teilnahme an deutschen Landtagswahlen sowie an deutschen Kommunalwahlen ist bei dauerhaftem Aufenthalt im Ausland ohne entsprechenden Wohnsitz in Deutschland in der Regel nicht möglich. Nähere Informationen hierzu erhalten Sie von den Innenressorts der Länder. Die dauerhaft im EU-Ausland lebenden Deutschen können an den Kommunalwahlen ihres Aufenthaltslands teilnehmen.

Bundestagswahlen am 27. September 2009
Wahlberechtigt sind bei Vorliegen der übrigen Voraussetzungen alle Deutschen im Sinne des Artikels 116 Abs. 1 des Grundgesetzes, die am Wahltag außerhalb der Bundesrepublik Deutschland leben, sofern sie nach dem 23. Mai 1949 und vor ihrem Fortzug mindestens drei Monate ununterbrochen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (einschließlich der neuen Bundesländer) eine Wohnung innegehabt oder sich sonst gewöhnlich aufgehalten haben. Die Einzelheiten für die Wahlteilnahme sind in der Bundeswahlordnung (BWO) geregelt.
Auf schriftlichen Antrag werden die im Ausland lebenden Deutschen in das vor jeder Wahl neu zu erstellende Wählerverzeichnis der Gemeinde eingetragen, in der sie vor ihrem Fortzug aus der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zuletzt gemeldet waren (§§ 16 bis 18 BWO).

Der Antrag muss bis spätestens zum 21. Tag vor der Wahl (6. September 2009) bei der letzten Wohnsitzgemeinde in Deutschland eingehen. Mit dem Antrag auf Eintragung in das Wählerverzeichnis muss ferner eine eidesstattliche Versicherung des Inhalts abgegeben werden, dass der Antragsteller wahlberechtigt ist und keinen anderen Antrag bei einer anderen Gemeinde auf Eintragung in das Wählerverzeichnis gestellt hat. Aufgrund der räumlichen Distanz zu der letzten Wohnsitzgemeinde in Deutschland, wird der Antrag auf Eintragung in das Wählerverzeichnis zugleich als Antrag auf Erteilung eines Wahlscheines (zur Briefwahl) gewertet. Mit dem Wahlschein werden mithin, soweit der Wahlberechtigte nicht ausdrücklich die Wahl vor dem Wahlvorstand wünscht, automatisch die Briefwahlunterlagen zugesandt.
Das Antragsformular für die Eintragung in ein Wählerverzeichnis zur Wahl des 17. Deutschen Bundestags am 27. September 2009 nebst einem Merkblatt kann bereits von der Internetseite des Bundeswahlleiters herunter geladen und direkt am Computer ausgefüllt werden. Bei Bedarf können schriftliche Exemplare des Antragsformulars bei den diplomatischen und berufskonsularischen Vertretungen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland im Ausland, beim Bundeswahlleiter und bei den Kreiswahlleitern angefordert werden. Alle Informationen finden Sie rechtzeitig vor der nächsten Bundestagswahl auch noch einmal aktualisiert auf den Internetseiten der deutschen Vertretungen in den USA, des Bundeswahlleiters sowie des Auswärtigen Amts.
