Dear Reader!
For our German World Team here in Hollywood, a very exciting weekend
lies behind us. Since our office is located on Hollywood Boulevard just
1 ½ blocks from the Kodak Theatre, we were able to witness the
growing excitement related to the 81st Academy Awards daily. With nominations
for Germany and Austria in the category “Best Foreign Language Film”,
and two nominations for the German short film production "Auf der
Strecke / On the Line" (Academy of Media Arts Cologne) by Swiss director
Reto Caffi and "Spielzeugland / Toyland" (Mephisto Film Production)
by the German director Jochen Alexander Freydank as well as nominations
for Werner Herzog and Henry Kaiser (A Creative Differences Production)
with "Encounters at the End of the World" as documentary film,
five nominations for “The Reader” (Mirage Enterprises and
Neunte Babelsberg Film GmbH Production), including Kate Winslet as best
actress in a leading role, all pointed to the continued success of German
film. And we have not been disappointed! Freydank’s “Toyland”
won the Oscar in the category “Live Action Short” and Kate
Winslet won the Oscar for “Best Lead Actress” for her portrayal
of Hanna Schmitz in “The Reader”, a film based on the novel
“Der Vorleser” by German author Bernhard Schlink. Congratulations
to all winners!
Please stay tuned for our Oscar Party pictures that will be online by
the end of this week on www.german-world.com
and for our Oscar reporting by Andreas Fuchs in our upcoming Spring 2009
issue.
